SURFING ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 1, NO. 1 (1962)

"The first few years of covers and inside layout are classics of style," according to Tim De La Vega, author of the Surfing Collectibles Guide. "You can easily see the influence that the great photographer Leroy Grannis had." Content includes a South Bay photo feature, with lots of Hermosa Beach pics from the early 1960s. Standouts include Steve Smith, Ricky Hatch, Harold Iggy, and Dewey Weber. Also includes "Rincon Winter and Spring" with Lance Carson and Johnny Fain, "What the Surfer Should Know About Sharks," and coverage of the West Coast Championships at Huntington Beach. A "color" pullout poster of Jose Angel at Waimea Bay as photographed by Dr. Don James is intact, plus Windansea, Sunset Beach, and lots of classic period ads. This copy is in very good condition, at least 80 percent of mint. Grease pencil at top right corner as shown in scan. Some yellowing and soiling has occurred. Otherwise light cover and spine wear with minimal pulling at staples. Complete and intact with no torn or missing pages and no cutouts. Printed on heavy stock. 48 pages.
