Vintage Collectibles - SOLD ITEMS

This is the true grandfather of all surf magazines, an original program for the 8th Annual International Surfing Championships held at Makaha Beach in November of 1960. Sponsored by the Waikiki Surf Club and chaired by Clarence Maki. Wally Froseith, Linda Benson, and Paul Strauch Jr. won the 1959 Makaha contest in Senior Men's, Women's, and Junior Men's, respectively. This rare program provides a narrative of the origins of surfing competition in Hawaii. In addition, it's loaded with period photos of Makaha, Sunset Beach, and Waikiki by Dr. Don James, Val Valentine, Clarence Maki, Edwin Kaneshiro, and Scoop Suzuki. It also features some great print ads for Hawaii businesses from the era, along with very early ads by Velzy, Bing, and Wardy. This program is in Betty-plus condition, at least 85 percent of mint. Very light cover and spine wear with no pulling at staples and no staple rust. Interior pages are perfect. Complete and intact with no torn or missing pages and no cutouts. No water damage of any kind. Packaged in an archival-quality clear plastic sleeve with an acid-free mat backing board. Measures approximately 8 1/2 wide x 11 inches tall. 32 pages.
